Calgary Family Day Event Ideas
In parts of Canada, Family Day has become a beloved annual tradition. Calgary officially commemorates Family Day on the third Monday in February, but the city comes to life throughout the entire weekend with unique and fun ways to spend time together as a family. Families come in all shapes and sizes, and there's an event for every type of family in Calgary.
These are the top Family Day events and activities in Calgary this year:
Family Quest
The Gasoline Alley Museum has created a Family Day adventure that will allow families to work together and enjoy a little bit of friendly competition as well. The Family Quest event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. February 14 through February 18 at the museum. Families will be able to choose from a variety of activities, such as creating their own race car and drag racing it to see how it performs or designing their own car on a digital platform. This Family Day event is open to all ages, so no one has to miss out.
Family FISHtival
Calgary families who enjoy fishing together will love the Family FISHtival at the Bow Habitat Station. This festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 16, and it will feature both outdoor and indoor activities. Outdoor activities include showshoeing, magnetic ice fishing and casting practice, as well as an opportunity to roast delicious marshmallows. Inside, families will be able to try their hand at fly tying as well as play family fishy games. This event is open to people of all ages, but strollers are prohibited due to biohazard concerns for the fish at the hatchery.
GLOW Downtown Winter Light Festival
While many of the Family Day events take place during the day, the GLOW Downtown Winter Light Festival offers more fun-filled adventure for after dark. This festival will take place each evening from February 14 through February 18 in the downtown area. It is a free event, and is designed to be inclusive and accessible for all. Throughout the downtown area, families will find beautiful light installations that add a festive glow to the community. It's designed to provide an additional source of light during the cold, dark month of February. In addition, there will be live music as well as food.
Music with Mandy and the Kiddonauts
To finish off the Family Day weekend, Music with Mandy and the Kiddonauts are presenting an improv show and concert for families with young children. There will be two performances on February 18, one at 10:30 a.m. and another at 12:30 p.m. Both performances will take place at Doherty Hall. Designed for preschool and elementary children, this event will introduce kids to the concepts of improv with an interactive performance. After the improv show is complete, Music with Mandy will give the kids an extra-special jazz performance. It's a unique opportunity to introduce young children to two forms of art they may not be as familiar with.
Families today are busier than ever before. Between extracurricular activities, long work hours and endless technological distractions, it can be difficult for families to really connect with one another and bond. Family Day provides families in Calgary with an opportunity to take advantage of fun community activities and make memories with their loved ones.
