New Speed Limits Will Be in Effect for School and Playground Zones
It's back-to-school time in Calgary and new times and speed limits will be in effect for school and playground zones. Motorists across Calgary should be aware of the new policies that have been approved by City Council that will be in effect starting Monday morning.
There will be new speed limits set in the city for school and playground zones. During the summer, the City Council put its stamp of approval on a policy that would implement these changes in these certain zones. Between the hours of 7:30 AM - 9:30 PM, motorists will need to slow down to a speed of 30 km an hour.
Up until now there has been a warning period in effect about the new times and limits. That time is now over so if you get caught driving faster than 30 km an hour in the selected zones, don't be surprised if you get handed a ticket.
The change was implemented to improve safety in the Calgary areas where there is a high volume of children. The new hours are consistent around the city so that drivers will be able to remember them easily. The new signs are now in place after crews worked on placing almost 5,000 playground and school zone signs throughout August.
Recently you may have seen some movie and TV ads that were being broadcast by the Calgary Police regarding the changes. Previously, the speed limits were reduced from 8:30 AM until an hour past sunset in playground zones and from 7:30 AM until 5 PM in school zones. The speed restrictions in the school areas are only in effect from Monday to Friday.Posted by on
