Today's the Big Opening of the Stampede

The Calgary Stampede officially starts today and, just in time, the state of emergency was lifted here in Calgary yesterday. The order was lifted officially just a day before the opening of the Stampede. This marked the 13th day of a state of emergency, which was something that no Calgarian could have foreseen just a couple of short weeks ago.

A transition is happening from emergency disaster citywide response to local relief and recovery efforts. The attention has turned to handling specific buildings in the flood damaged areas and people that are having to deal with the impact of the disaster.

The Saddledome suffered severe damage during the flooding and unfortunately won't be reopened for the opening ceremonies. As a result, some of the major concerts scheduled for the beginning of the Stampede including the Dixie Chicks and Kiss have had to be canceled.

Otherwise, Western hospitality is ready to welcome everybody to the city and the show will go on. Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi wants the world to know that Calgary is open for business and that this year's event shows the true spirit of Calgary. For the city to recover this quickly to keep the show running has been nothing less than a miracle and Calgarians from all parts of the city really have something to celebrate this year.

The parade marshall of the Calgary Stampede and well-known astronaut, Chris Hatfield, proudly waved to the crowd today and took some time to sign a few autographs. Mayor Nenshi received a lot of well-deserved big cheers from the large crowd as he passed by on his horse in jeans and cowboy hat.

This show is not only one that is entertainment-based but one that demonstrates the true courage and persistents of Calgarians and their neighbors that came to lend a helping hand. Posted by on
