The community of Fairview was established in 1959. Just three years earlier, the area was annexed and became a part of Calgary. Fairview belongs to Ward 9 and has Alderman Gian-Carlo Carra to represent the neighbourhood in the Calgary City Council. The community's eastern area is an industrial park while the western region is primarily residential.

The population in Fairview was 3,552 in 2011. A 2005 statistical report revealed that the neighbourhood's median household income was $53,167. In 2006, residential properties in Fairview were single and semi-detached homes and row houses with 73.1% of the private dwellings being owned and 27.3% rented.
